Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October, we come together to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to educate, support, and remind one another that early detection truly saves lives.

At Oushk Pharmacy, we believe that knowledge is empowerment. Taking a few moments each month to check your breasts can make a real difference to your health and wellbeing.

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow abnormally and form a lump or mass known as a tumour. It primarily affects women, but it can also occur in men.

It’s the most common cancer in the UK, affecting around 1 in 7 women in their lifetime. While the numbers can sound worrying, there’s a positive message - when caught early, breast cancer is highly treatable, with survival rates over 90%.

Early Signs and Symptoms

Being aware of how your breasts normally look and feel can help you notice changes early. Some of the key signs to watch for include:

A new lump or thickened area in your breast or underarm.
Changes in size or shape of one or both breasts.
Nipple changes — discharge, inversion (turning inward), or dry, flaky skin.
Skin changes — redness, dimpling, or puckering that looks like orange peel.
Persistent breast pain that isn’t related to your menstrual cycle.
Most breast changes are not cancerous, but it’s always safest to get checked by a healthcare professional.

Understanding Breast Abnormalities

It’s important to remember that not all changes or lumps are cancer. Many are benign (non-cancerous), but distinguishing between them isn’t something you should do alone.

Common abnormalities include:

Lumps or masses: Hard, irregular lumps are more concerning, while soft, moveable ones are often benign cysts.
Texture changes: Dimpling or thickening may signal tissue changes that need reviewing.
Nipple abnormalities: Discharge, inversion, or crusting could indicate underlying issues.
Swelling: A sudden or unexplained increase in breast size should always be assessed.

If something feels different, trust your instincts — and get it checked.
